Atlas unveils latest technology in textile testing



Atlas Material Testing Technology — a global leader in weathering testing and equipment is excited to introduce the latest technology for accelerated exposure testing of textiles, the Xenotest 220+.

Since the introduction of the first Xenotest 150 in 1954, Atlas has worked with the global textile industry as a competent and reliable partner. The Xenotest 220+ is a product of that cooperation, developed from years of experience and feedback.

The instrument uses an air-cooled xenon light source with a rotating rack. It is equipped with an intuitive, user-optimized control system featuring European and Asian languages. Also available are newly designed easy-insertion sample holders. Ideal for lightfastness testing under standard conditions and for applications such as ISO 105 B02 and AATCC TM16, the Xenotest 220+ addresses the basic needs of the textile industry.

Available in March 2010, users may select from a basic model Xenotest 220 or an enhanced model Xenotest 220+ featuring Atlas XenoTouch software with remote control, E-Mail Service and Online Monitoring add-ons.

Daimer introduces unheated carpet cleaning machine



Daimer Industries, Inc., a Massachusetts-based vendor and global exporter of industrial carpet cleaners, is now shipping its lowest-priced professional-grade 50 Hz carpet cleaners. The XPC-5750 unheated carpet extractors feature a 2-stage motor, low-fluid technology for quick drying.

"These carpet cleaners are easy to operate, yet powerful enough for commercial jobs," Daimer.com North American spokesman Matthew Baratta. "The XPC-5750 offers small footprint and light weight."

Each XPC-5750 measures 35.6 cm long by 58.4 cm wide by 61 cm high and weighs 18.1 kg. The portable units have a two-stage vacuum motor and produce 254 cm of water lift as well as 47.2 l/s of air flow. The pump pressures of these carpet cleaners can reach 4.1 BAR. Though the machines are unheated, the systems can accept inlet water as high as 98.9°C.

The carpet extractors include low-fluid technology that allows carpets to dry in about six hours. Quick drying capabilities prevent mold and carpet rot, while allowing clients to use the carpet in less time.

The carpet cleaners include 6.1 meter solution and vacuum hoses, as well as 17 L solutions tanks and 15L recovery tanks.

The new carpet cleaners are available to customers in most countries and minimum orders apply.

After doing business for 25 years in our Spartanburg location as Zimmer Machinery Corporation, ZIMMER MACHINERY CORPORATION becomes ZIMMER AMERICA CORPORATION, reflecting the fact that we have expanded our business far beyond the core business of supplying, installing and servicing textile machinery.

New Spectro LFP Tex for textile & fabric printing market

The digital textile and fabric printing market has some very special needs which especially measuring devices is concerned. Due to the characteristics of the surface and the textile itself "standard" color measuring devices are not able to deliver accurate readings.

BARBIERI electronic now offers a dedicated spectrophotometer for this market - the Spectro LFP Tex which in fact is a special edition of the market leading Spectro LFP. The feature that makes the Spectro LFP Tex unique is his large measuring aperture of 8mm which is fundamental to measure textiles. Thanks to this large aperture textured surfaces of textiles and fabrics will be optically averaged and therefore the right color impression determined.

For easy mounting of the textile for measuring, a special sample holder will be delivered together with the measuring device. This holder prevents distortions and slipping during the whole automatic measuring process. As a result measurements of textiles will be done fully automatically and most accurate.

Unique tangalia weaving art receives GI ta



Recently, the Tangaliya Hastkala Association, located in Wadhwan, Gujarat has recieved the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) assisted the association in procuring the GI registration. The products for which the GI registrations were sought are Shawls, Sarees and handkerchiefs. 

Tangalia craft has a distinction of its own. It consists of knotting a contrast color thread, along the warp and pushing them together to create the effect of raised dots. This unique art is done using wool, cotton, silk, acrylic and viscose. The tangaliya products are made up of natural and synthetic material or a combination of both. 

Since ages, weavers have designed motifs inspired by nature and their surroundings. Tangaliya motifs have a very geometric and graphic feel. The emphasis is on basic shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles and circles. The placement of ach dana is done precisely by calculating the distance between the warp and the weft yarns. Lots of contrasting colors are used in dana work. Commonly used colors are Blue, Green, red, pink, black, grey, maroon, purple and orange. White is used most prominently along with other colors.

The most basic motif of Tangaliya is the Ladwa - it refers to a ladoo, an Indian sweet. The other predominant motifs are peacock, felt of peacock, Ambo tree (Mango tree), Khajuri (Date palm tree), peacock on bush, peacock with diamond shape motif and peacock sitting on bungalows and airplanes. Tangaliya is produced in Surendranagar district of Gujarat and is spread over around 26 villages, practiced by a particular community called "Dangasia" (earlier a part of the Shepherd community). 

Tangaliya Weavers Association established under the Societies Registration Act 1860 is responsible for the production and marketing of Tangaliya. Tangaliya (also spelled as Tangalia) is a very unique craft and has its origin and history in the roots of early settlement of life in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, unfortunately, this craft either remained unnoticed or beyond the reach of the craft historians. Moreover, the craft was basically produced for the use of the community, which also created self-sufficiency and sustainability in supporting the entire community with clothing.

Tangalia craft which is distinctive from others consists of knotting a contrast color thread, along the warp and pushing them together to create the effect of raised dots. The effect is created without the use of any mechanical device and is manufactured using pit loom, which is installed in their homes, as the craft is basically a household activity. The pit looms do not have a warp beam; instead, the yarn hank is knotted to a pole from which the yarns are connected through the heald shafts to the cloth roll at the weavers end.

'Exempt Textile Sector From Ban On Used Machinery' – Mr Ismy, API

Recently the Indonesian government had announced to ban import of second hand machinery in the country. “This move on the part of the government is to help the domestic machinery industry as well as reduce energy consumption”, Mr Ansari Bukhari, Director General, Ministry of Trade and Industry, had said will announcing the same.

Since this decision may affect the textile industry which imports a sizeable amount of textile machinery, fibre2fashion.com spoke to Mr. Ernovian G. Ismy, Secretary General of the Indonesian Textile Association to get his views on the decision of the Ministry of Industry.

Mr Ismy said, “In our opinion the policy should be re-investigated since the local textile machinery industry is still unable to fulfill demand of machinery from textile industry and due to the ongoing crisis, some of the textile industry players are facing difficulties in purchasing the more expensive new machines.”

Contradicting the decision of the ministry, Mr Ismy added by saying that, “Not all used machines are in-efficient. Actually a few of the used machines are able to work for good periods of time and the biggest stumbling factor is that the textile industry in Indonesia lacks trust and support of the banking and financial agencies to fund purchase of new machineries.”

Facts about Weaving Loom Types

The earliest art of hand weaving along with hand spinning remains a popular craft. There are different types of weaving looms and these include handloom, frame loom and back strap loom.

A loom is a mechanism or tool used for weaving yarn and thread into textiles. Looms vary in a wide assortment of sizes. They come in huge free standing hand looms, tiny hand-held frames, to vast automatic mechanical tools. A loom can as well pertain to an electric line construction like that of a wiring loom. The main task of looms is to clutch the twist threads under pressure to enable the progress of interweaving of the woof strands. The loom's system and exact form can differ to some extent; however it still performs the basic application.

There are many kinds of weaving looms to choose from, depending on what you plan to weave. When planning on buying a weaving loom, consider several things. These include how large a piece do you intend to weave; how much experience do you have with weaving looms; how much space is there for your looms; and how much time are you willing to spend on it.

Some looms are fairly small and simply mastered by their users. They can even be used by young children. Larger looms tend to be more complex but still have more detailed options for better usage. The size of the loom is the one to determine the width of whatever weave material you're going to select. The length is more controlled in the table looms.


Different Types of Looms


1) Hand Looms

The first and original loom was vertically twist-weighted types, where threads are hung from a wooden piece or branch or affixed to the floor or ground. The weft threads are manually shoved into position or pushed through a rod that also becomes the shuttle. Raising and lowering each warp thread one by one is needed in the beginning. It is done by inserting a piece of rod to create a shack, the gap between warp threads in order for the woof to easily traverse the whole warp right away.


2) Ground Looms

Horizontal ground looms permit the warp threads to be chained between a couple of rows of dowels. The weaver needs to bend forward to perform the task easily. Thus, pit looms with warp chained over a ditch are invented to let the weaver have his or her legs positioned below and leveled with the loom.


3) Back strap Looms

They are well recognized for their portability. The one end of this loom type is secured around the waist of the weaver and the other end is attached around a fixed thing like door, stake, or tree. Pressure applied can be customized by just bending back.
