Overlock, also known as "serging" or "serger stitch", can be formed with one to four threads, one or two needles, and one or two loopers. Overlock sewing machines are usually equipped with knives that trim or create the edge immediately in front of the stitch formation. Household and industrial overlock machines are commonly used for garment seams in knit or stretchy fabrics, for garment seams where the fabric is light enough that the seam does not need to be pressed open, and for protecting edges against raveling. Machines using two to four threads are most common, and frequently one machine can be configured for several varieties of overlock stitch. Overlock machines with five or more threads usually make both a chainstitch with one needle and one looper, and an overlock stitch with the remaining needles and loopers. This combination is known as a "safety stitch". Household overlock machines are widely used.

Solar machine to revolutionize Indian silk reeling

The traditional tiring technique of reeling silk, under which first cocoons are soaked in a pot and then yarn is spun manually, is likely to come to an end with the launch of the Solar Multi Muga Reeling cum Spinning Machine.

The new machine is so devised that it can simultaneously carry out the reeling as well as spinning jobs for different varieties of silk like Mulberry, Muga, Eri and Tasar without any laborious human effort.

The new machine is a brain child of Mr. Manoharmayum Manihar Sharma, an innovator and a master craftsman of Adarsh Kartha (Marked) Industries based in Nongmeibung Pung Makhong, near Imphal, the capital of Northeast Indian State of Manipur.

The machine designed by Mr. Manihar uses a solar plate to operate, which has a capacity to charge 17 volt to 15 watt on a usual sunlit day.

The flammability of many textiles, including easily ignitable cotton or polyester materials, necessitates that clothing fabrics be treated with flame retardant compounds to suppress the burn rate.

Phosphorus based flame retardants have not been shown to form carcinogens during combustion, such as dioxins or furans. Work clothes, uniforms, baby clothing and other garments, therefore, are typically coated with a phosphorus compound for the purpose of flame retardancy.

During the coating and processing of treated fabrics, the flame retardant material must be closely monitored to ensure optimum quality without incurring cost overruns due to product rejection or overuse of chemicals.

Textile Machinery Sector Faces Economic Context

Following several quarters of sustained recovery compared to the minimum levels recorded during the two-year period from 2008-09, Italy’s textile machinery industry has seen a slowdown in new orders.

This downturn, already apparent in the year’s second quarter, was stressed during the summer period from July to September, as illustrated by the economic survey conducted by Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers - ACIMIT’s research department.

The overall index of orders for the year’s third quarter shows a 45% decrease compared to the previous period, stopping at a value of 70.8 points. The greatest drop was recorded for exports, where the index registered 75.3 points (-46%). On the domestic market, orders fell by 39%, for a value of 60.4 points.

The economic context will remain uncertain over the coming months. Economic growth at a global level is slackening off, and this is also occurring in emerging markets with a greater demand for textile machinery. For both the domestic and export markets, the majority of manufacturers estimate that the fourth quarter of 2011 will, on the whole, bring in a stable flow of orders, compared to the three previous months.

However, regarding export markets, and in spite of the positive signs at the recent ITMA trade fair, the percentage of companies forecasting increased orders is greater than those which foresee increases in the domestic market (34% compared to 13%).

Despite having fewer exhibitors and a fewer number of visitors than the previous show in Münich four years ago, the 2011 edition of the International Exhibition of Textile Machinery (ITMA 2011) in Barcelona ended with results that far exceeded expectations for Shima Seiki.

Considering the current global economy and the fact that an overwhelming majority of textile production is located in China, the venue location of Barcelona, Spain did not offer consolation for concerns initially raised regarding cost-effectiveness of exhibiting at ITMA.

The international textile and garment machinery industry converged for the 16th edition of ITMA, the world’s most established textile and garment machinery technology exhibition in Barcelona, Spain from 22 to 29 September 2011.

Trade visitorship of over 100,000 from 138 countries was registered for the eight-day event held at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via fairgrounds. Just over 90 per cent of the visitors came from outside of Spain. The international mix of visitors and buyers was very well received by exhibitors.

Mr Stephen Combes, President of CEMATEX said, “ITMA 2011 has surpassed our expectations. Visitors to ITMA 2011 can look forward to knowledge sharing, cross-fertilisation of ideas and more collaborative interactions with some of the world’s leading textile researchers and educators.

A total of 46 institutions have applied to take part in the Research and Education (R&E) pavilion,
making this a key highlight at the 2011 ITMA exhibition, which will be held at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue in Barcelona, Spain, during September 22-29.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet experts at Textiles Intelligence, in Hall 3 on Stand C110. Members of the editorial team will be available for questions on trade and production trends in the global textile industry, and companies are invited to visit the stand to share information about new products and innovations.

CEMATEX will be awarding grants to all the participants in the Research and Education pavilion. And a total of 24 abstracts have been approved for presentation at the R&E Speakers Platform. The presentations on process technology and textiles and R&D will be held during September 23-25.

Lakshmi Machine Q1 net profit rises 37%

Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW) Limited, a leading textile machinery manufacturer in India, has posted a 37 percent increase in net profit during the first quarter of current fiscal ended June 30. The company’s net profit rose to Rs. 411.4 million with a sound 50 percent increase in its total earnings to Rs. 5.02 billion.

Earnings from the textile machinery business, which accounts for 85 percent of the total revenues, increased to Rs. 4.38 billion, registering a year-on-year growth of 45 percent. Profit from this segment improved by 36 percent to Rs. 423.3 million, which was 89 percent of the total profit.

Operating Profit Margin (OPM) of the company was, however, under pressure and declined by 2.3 percent to 13.9 percent, mainly owing to hike in price of raw material.

Employee cost too declined by 1.8 percent during the quarter to 8.3 percent. While operating profit rose 27 percent to Rs. 708.8 million, it’s Profit Before Interest, Depreciation and Taxes (PBIDT) was up by 23 percent to Rs. 854.5 million.

Being a debt free company, LMW enjoys the benefit of paying nil interest cost.

AMS-224EN Series to increase sewing-pattern storage capacity

JUKI is launching the "AMS-224EN Series" with a dramatically-increased sewing-pattern storage capacity on the main body of the sewing machine. This machine is a new model of the AMS-224E Series. The new model inherits the established productivity, energy conservation and seam quality of the predecessor model.

The computer-controlled machine automatically performs sewing of patterns stored in its memory. The new model has the largest sewing area among the computer-controlled cycle machine AMS Series. It comes in two different types; one provided with a sewing area of "450 mm (W) x 300 mm (L)" and the other provided with a sewing area of "600 mm (W) x 300 mm (L)". The machine is used for attaching handles to bags, for sewing shape tacking of sports shoes, air bags and for sewing two or more pieces of small articles, such as sewing purses, at the same time.

IMB set to focus increasingly on know-how transfer

IMB – World of Fashion and Textile Processing – is going to open its doors on 8 May 2012. As in the previous 38 years, the “who’s who” of the industry will once again come together in Cologne to present the world’s most comprehensive range of machinery, systems, control and production technologies, including IT, for the entire textile supply chain. TenCate is investigating the possible restart of Osiris Inkjet Systems B.V. (Hengelo, the Netherlands) following the petition for liquidation filed by this company on Wednesday, 11 May 2011. Over the past ten years Osiris developed the first inkjet printing solution (ISIS) for textiles for the fashion industry at industrial speed (up to 30 metres a minute).

In recent years TenCate, together with Xennia Technology (79% TenCate) and other industrial partners, has been involved in innovation projects, both European and those subsidized by the Province of Overijssel (the Netherlands) in the field of inkjet technology. One of the results is the outcome of the European Digitex project, which was presented in December 2010. TenCate and Xennia presented a demonstrator for continuous inkjet textile finishing.

Sustainable smart textiles
Textile finishing based on inkjet technology will on the one hand bring about significant innovation in the field of sustainability and on the other hand will result in the development of revolutionary products (smart textiles). This technology can be regarded as nano-surface coating of technical textiles.

TenCate Protective Fabrics intends to introduce inkjet technology as a form of finishing on a pilot basis this year. This will over time allow the production of new protective materials for medical applications, defence, emergency services, etc.

Osiris and Xennia / TenCate
Osiris and TenCate developed separately in the past, in view of the fact that applications for textiles for the fashion industry (Osiris) and for technical textiles (TenCate) have different requirements. Richard Furter, Head of Textile Technology and member of the Executive Committee of Uster Technologies Ltd, has expressed his desire to take retirement at the end of 2011. Thomas Nasiou has been appointed as his successor. He is currently working at Uster Technologies in the dual role of Product Manager and as Head of Marketing in China and will assume his new role on June 1, 2011.

Richard Furter (67) has expressed his desire to retire after 44 years of service in Uster Technologies Ltd and the former Zellweger Uster AG. CEO Geoffrey Scott commented: “We will be sorry to see Richard leave. He is a deeply respected member of the Uster team, both inside the company and within the industry. In his time with the Uster Group, he has held management positions in various areas of the company, including Marketing, Business Development and Research & Development as well as leading our Textile Technology team for the past 13 years.

Richard has made a significant contribution to the development of the Company over the years. He has been a valued colleague and provided great friendship, counsel and advice to me in my time with the company as well as supporting me through the two MBO’s and the successful completion of the IPO. Our Board of Directors and the whole management team thank him for his invaluable service and unwavering dedication to the company.” Richard Furter will be retained by the company on a consultancy basis.

JUKI is happy to announce that we will be running a booth at Texprocess 2011 to be held in Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt in Germany for four days from the 24 to 27 of May 2011.

Under the exhibition concept "Be the best in CS - New Edge Solution for Your Success” (JUKI's proposal of novel ideas for success), we will be showing a total of 55 models; 43 will be state-of-the-art industrial sewing machines and 12 will be household sewing machines. Among the 55 models, approximately half of them are new.

Picker/machinery movement restrictions lifted over Easter

Cotton Australia has successfully negotiated exemptions from travel restrictions usually applied over the Easter holiday period. These are the details for each state.

NSW

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay has announced an exemption from the 2011 Easter travel restrictions for the NSW cotton industry.

Mr Gay said the exemption had been put in place to help the cotton industry manage a bumper season and takes into account the expected high volume of traffic during the Easter holiday period and the need to ensure the safety of all road users.

The NSW RTA is providing an exemption allowing oversize vehicles involved in the 2011 cotton harvest and operating under the Class 1 Oversize Notice or the Class 1 Permit (ie cotton harvesting equipment being floated) to travel on the Newell Highway for three days of the five-day long holiday period.

Under the exemption, operators will be able to travel on the Newell Highway from sunrise on Friday 22 April to sunset on Sunday 24 April. These days would normally be prohibited for highway travel by all oversize vehicles covered by the Notice or Permit. The exemption will not apply on ANZAC day 25 April or on Tuesday 26 April.

The third edition of the combined ITMA ASIA + CITME show will be held from 12 to 16 June 2012 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. It will continue to be the unrivalled marketing platform for textile machinery manufacturers tapping into the vibrant China market.

Rieter shareholders agree to split of the Rieter Group

Shareholders at 120th Annual General Meeting of Rieter Holding Ltd approved all proposals by the Board of Directors, also including a split of the Rieter Group by separating the Textile Systems and Automotive Systems divisions into independent listed companies. They furthermore voted Erwin Stoller to the Board of Directors for another 3-year term of office.

The 120th Annual General Meeting of Rieter Holding Ltd was attended by 813 shareholders representing 51% of share capital. They approved all Board proposals, the Annual Report with the annual accounts and consolidated financial statements for 2010, formal discharge of the Board of Directors and Group management team members for the business year 2010, and change of company purpose required in connection with the Group split. Consultative approval of the Compensation Report was confirmed by some 90% of those present. Shareholders furthermore voted Erwin Stoller to the Rieter Board of Directors for another 3-year term of office.

Board Chairman Erwin Stoller opened the meeting by pointing out its historical importance: shareholders were asked to approve a split of the Rieter Group by separating the textile machinery and automotive supply businesses into independent listed companies. 99% of shareholders present approved this proposal, which included payment of a special dividend to Rieter Holding Ltd shareholders in the form of registered shares in Autoneum Holding Ltd.

Tatham’s TSX & ABB to help achieve precise textile control

Tatham Ltd, a specialist textile machinery company, have in response to industry demand developed the technology to provide higher production speeds with improved product weight distribution for crosslapper control. The system can be retrofitted to all makes of crosslappers.

Tatham’s latest TSX control system utilises ABB high performance machinery drives and servomotors. Several panel combinations are available depending on the existing crosslapper configuration. The system is linked to the master process control using Profibus, an ABB AC500 PLC provides positioning data to the drives which convert it into control signals to maintain the speed of the servomotors.

The new control software provides precise positioning that is repeatable resulting in total control of the batt profile. The heaviness of the batt is a function of the speed it is laid down at and using the ABB PLC, drives and servomotors allows us to vary this precisely, giving a much more accurate and controllable build up of the layers. We can adjust the speed of the carriage at the edges of the batt to avoid distortions and maintain the required density across the entire width.

All parameters can be adjusted from the latest touchscreen operator interface. The batt density can be adjusted across its width to suit the product requirements with coefficient of variation (CV) values of around +/-1 percent. It is also possible to shape the batt to any required profile. Essentially the accuracy of the ABB high performance machinery drives mean the TSX system can provide precise control of web delivery to achieve the required batt profile.

Retrofitting a TSX to an existing crosslapper will bring considerable savings. The TSX is very energy efficient, before a recent installation the crosslapper used 60 A peak which was cut to 15 A afterwards. With fibre costs increasing it is essential to control the product thickness to minimise fibre waste.

Santex extends textile finishing niche in Asia

With three months ahead, worldwide exhibitors are preparing actively for their participation at ShanghaiTex 2011 which will be held on June 14-17, 2011. China is viewed as one of the fastest economic growth regions in the world. The market has huge domestic demand for textile and clothes. ‘Imports of textile machinery should be zero-rated’ – Mr Balwani

“We demand a complete roll-back on the 17 percent sales tax imposed on import of textile machinery, equipments and spares”, said, Mr Javed Balwani, Chief Coordinator - Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association and Convener - Council of All Pakistan Textile Association (CAPTA).

Mr Balwani was reacting to the imposition of 17 percent sales tax by the Pakistani government on imports of textile machinery, spares and equipment.

In a recent notification, the government restricted zero-rating sales tax measure on five export sectors; textile, leather, surgical, sports and carpets to only registered manufacturer-exporters or only exporters.

He was of the opinion that imports of machinery should be zero-rated as was done earlier, with the main benefit being that, cost of doing business falls.

SITM reveals for the 1st time weft insertion machine in 36E

French warp knitting machine engineering company Schinasi International Textile Machines (SITM) claims to have developed the world’s finest weft insertion device for a tricot machine in gauge E36 (36 needles per inch). The company which is based in Chanteloup les Vignes , a half hour train ride from central Paris, is claiming the machine as a ‘world first’, as until now the finest available gauge for weft insertion tricot machines was 32E.

A combination of the finest knitting elements fulfills this hope to see a west insertion machine running at 800rpm in 36E on 130".

The 36E weft insertion device was developed specifically for an SITM customer last year and the retrofitted machine has now been running successfully in production at the customer’s factory for around four months. The device was designed and manufactured using high grade parts by SITM’s engineers and retrofitted to a used Karl Mayer HKS MSU 130" weft insertion machine.

SITM was created in 1986 in a Paris suburb by the current owner Nessim Schinasi, and has been a partner of German warp knitting machine builder LIBA Maschinenfabrik GmbH for 40 years. SITM represents Liba in sales of new machines in France, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. However, the company’s main activity is the rebuilding of both Liba and Karl Mayer tricot and raschel machines and it claims to be the only such company to specialise in reconditioning machines from both of the leading German builders.

LMW to acquire 50% in Rieter-LMW Machinery

Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd announced that M/s. Rieter-LMW Machinery Limited, Coimbatore(RLM) is a Joint Venture Company wherein 50% of the paid up share capital are held by the Company and the remaining 50% is held by M/s. Rieter Machine Works Limited, Switzerland(Rieter).

Top economist to deliver keynote at World Textile Summit

One of the world’s most eminent economists, Professor Barry J. Eichengreen, will be a keynote speaker at the ITMA-ITMF World Textile Summit, in September.

Prof Eichengreen is the George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Professor of Economics and Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His most recent book, published this year, is ‘Exorbitant Privilege: The Rise and Fall of the Dollar and the Future of the International Monetary System’, and last year he co-edited ‘Emerging Giants: China and India in the World Economy’.

He is also a Research Associate of the US National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow of the UK’s Centre for Economic Policy Research. In the late 1990s he was Senior Policy Advisor at the International Monetary Fund.

Prof Eichengreen, who will deliver insights into the future of the global economy and the industrial prospects for its major players, is the Summit’s second keynote speaker. It was earlier announced that former United Nations Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan will engage with delegates on the topic of sustainability, in the light of the UN Global Compact to which several major textile firms are signatories.

“In 2011 the world economy is recovering from a shock that has seriously damaged the textile industry and disrupted international trade,” said Prof Eichengreen. “I’m delighted to have this opportunity to engage in discussion with industry leaders at the World Textile Summit and examine how a post-crisis world will look.”

Intertek awards 'Compliance Practitioners Initiative' certificates

The first class of Compliance Practitioners Initiative (CPI) Certified Quality Engineers were awarded their certificates along with membership cards in a grand function in Bangalore held on February 18.

“Donot extend fruits of TUFs to imported second-hand machinery” – Mr Panchal

“The fruits of the very successful Textile Up-gradation Fund scheme (TUFs) should not be extended to those importing second-hand machinery”, echoed, Mr Jayendra Panchal, Director of the 98 years-old Ahmedabad-based textile machinery manufacturer – Shakti Auto Loom Manufacturing Pvt Ltd.

Mr Panchal was reacting to the recent announcement made by the Textile Commissioner; Mr Joshi with regards to the soon to be announced refurbished TUFs.

Speaking exclusively to Fibre2fashion, Mr Panchal said, “Weavers across India have been importing second-hand weaving machinery under TUFs. This comes at a very heavy cost to the Indian textile machinery manufacturers as customs duty on imported textile machinery is lower than excise duty paid by Indian textile machinery producers”.

“Instead the government should promote the local textile machinery manufacturers, or otherwise TUFs benefit should be reduced for those importing second machinery”, he noted.

“I am willing to make major investments to produce high-technology weaving machinery, but considering that 95 percent of the weaving machinery imported under TUFs is second-hand, I am very apprehensive about starting the project”, he informed.

“Under the circumstances, I am appealing to the government to not extend the fruits of the very successful TUFs to those importing second-hand machinery, or create a level playing field”, he pleaded to the union government and the textiles ministry.

‘Refurbished TUFs likely soon’ – Textile Commissioner

Termination of the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) Scheme in June last year, severely hit the large as well as the medium scale units in the textile sector. However, it is expected that the scheme aimed at up-gradation of the textile units in the sector may soon be restored in a renewed form.

Textile Commissioner, A B Joshi revealed that the Scheme was discontinued for the sake of reviewing the present structure, and that the Government is expected to restore the scheme, shortly.

He said this while addressing major industry players at a seminar. Discontinuation of the fund badly hit many of the textile units, and thus the Government was called upon to reintroduce the same.

Further, while the industry was already under distress as the issue was not taken up in the current budget, an excise duty of 10 percent was imposed on branded readymade garments and made-ups by the Finance Ministry, to add to the duress.

The proposal of excise duty faced criticism even from other experts who claimed that, such a move would prove detrimental for the industry and may even affect the sector’s hiring ability. An expert even compared the proposed tax to introduction of licence raj in the sector.

Easing import rules on machinery boosts textile sector

Prime Minister’s advisor on textile affairs, Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, lauded foreign investor’s role in the development of its textile industry.

Inaugurating the Italian Textile Technology Seminar, organized by Italian Trade Commission - Pakistan, he said that the Italian textile machineries were contributing in a very big way. Italy is the 5th largest exporter of textile machineries to Pakistan with 10.11 percent share after China (22.7%), Japan (19.55%), Germany (18.22%) and Switzerland (14.9%).

Pakistan government’s decision to withdraw duties on imported textile machineries under National Textile Strategy 2009-2014, has proved to be a big boost for its textile industry. After this decision, the country has registered a thumping growth rate of 25 percent in textile exports. It also helped to attract higher foreign investments in the country, he informed.

Introduction of BMR brought in investments of US $5 billion in to the textile sector, while IGATEX and Textile Asia were successful events. All these initiatives have been proved fruitful and equally rewarding to the industry, he added by saying.

French textile machinery manufacturers are often world leaders on their specialties. Their strategy is to offer tailor made solutions to solve customers’ needs and be their long term

Swiss textile machinery, item of key import - Consul General

Consul General of Switzerland, Didier Boschung recently stated that, a big trade delegation including those from textile industry of Pakistan is planning to pay a visit to Switzerland in May this year, to survey the trade prospects in Switzerland and to enhance mutual trade between the two nations.

He called upon the industrialists to join the delegation, which is being arranged by the Swiss Business Council (SBC) in association with the Swiss Consulate General Karachi and Swiss Asian Chamber Zurich.

Picanol Weaving Machines experiences a strong year in 2010

The consolidated turnover of the Picanol Group for the 2010 financial year amounts to 395.77 million euros, an increase in turnover of 58% compared to the turnover of 250.23 million euros in 2009.

The turnover of Picanol NV increased by 55% from 170.21 million euros in 2009 to 264.08 million euros in 2010, mainly as a result of a strong increase in the volume of weaving machines sold. The contribution of Picanol NV’s turnover to the consolidated turnover totals 66.7% in 2010.

The gross profit of the Picanol Group for the 2010 financial year was 81.94 million euros, compared to 23.62 million euros in 2009. The gross margin increased from 9.4% to 20.7%, mainly because the fixed production costs did not increase in line with the higher turnover.

As a result of the strong increase in turnover, a further decrease in the general and administrative costs and leaving out the the restructuring costs, the operating result increased from -28.17 million euros in 2009 to 46.73 million euros in 2010. The operating result in 2009 included restructuring costs of 12.02 million euros.

Weaving Machines

The Weaving Machines division experienced a strong year in 2010, mainly as a result of the quicker than expected recovery of the weaving machine market in Asia. Particularly in China, the market for locally produced machines started to recover at the end of 2009. The facility in Suzhou (China) was the first to profit from the improving Chinese market. From the second quarter, exporting textile companies were also running at a cruising speed.

This resulted in a recovery in the demand for weaving machines produced in Ypres. In the second half of 2010, the market remained good, which was also due to the favorable exchange rate of the Euro. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the Chinese demand for weaving machines slowed down; one of the reasons being the continuously increasing price of cotton and the volatile exchange rates. However, this effect was compensated for by an increasing demand from other regions in the world. Sales of spare parts and weaving accessories also profited from a favorable market in 2010.

Dilip B. Ludhiana sewing machine & RMG sector fumes after budget

Ludhiana, the industrial hub of Punjab experienced a severe jerk on the last day of February, as Budget 2011 brought its key sewing machine and readymade garment (RMG) industries under the cover of central excise duty, thus compelling the sector representatives to launch an agitation against the decision.

A central excise duty of 10 percent on branded garments and one percent on sewing machines has been proposed under the Budget for 2011-12 fiscal.

Clothing and sewing machine industries are the core industries of Ludhiana. Thus, distressed by the proposal of subjecting these core industries to central excise duty imposition, the industry representatives have forewarned of launching a protest against the government if it does not revoke this proposal.

Representatives of the sewing machinery industry have forewarned that, they will not accept this duty imposition and would totally close down their businesses if the government does not withdraw its decision. Also, it would not be feasible for the Rs. 3.5 billion industry to continue with the business if the duty is imposed.

The RMG manufacturers too have considered this duty to be harsh, and have urged the Centre to reconsider the same. Also, it is being claimed that, the move would certainly affect the small scale RMG producers, and would even lead to a rise in the prices of branded garments.

We are back on the growth track - CEO of Uster

Uster Technologies AG, the leading high technology instrument manufacturer of products for quality measurement and certification for the textile industry, announced sales of CHF 132.8 million in FY 2010, an increase of 31.8% compared to the prior year figure of CHF 100.8 million. Growth was driven by significantly improved overall economic conditions in all major markets and the recovery in textile machinery investments spearheaded by the Asian markets, most notably China.

The Group further strengthened its strong market position and delivered impressive margins. EBITA reached CHF 34.6 million (2009: CHF 22.7 million) improving the margin to 26.0%. The Group's net result amounted to CHF 20.8 million (2009: CHF 1.2 million). It was enhanced by one-off effects arising from the resolution of tax issues from earlier years. In 2010, Uster Technologies Ltd further decreased its net debt to CHF 76.5 million thereby demonstrating the Company's strong cash generation power.

In 2010, the textile industry experienced a sharp recovery. At the same time raw material prices, especially cotton, and yarn prices increased compared to their levels at the beginning of the year. The result was further emphasis on the importance of quality and enhanced interest in measuring and testing systems. This positive development was supported by an improvement in credit and trade financing terms for the Group's customers in all major markets. China continued to be the leader in the textile industry whilst the mid-Asian markets including India, Turkey, Bangladesh and Pakistan recovered from the economic instability of previous years.

2010 as recovery year for Italian textile machinery manufacturers

Preliminary 2010 data drawn up by ACIMIT (the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers) show a decisive recovery under way for Italy’s textile machinery sector, in the wake of a 2009 which had been marked by a conspicuous drop in production. In terms of value, Italy’s textile machinery production recorded an 18% increase with respect to 2009, from 1.9 to 2.3 billion Euros. Exports drew a similarly favourable increase, at +19%, reaching a value of just under 1.8 billion Euros.

Obviously, these gains in sales and orders are a physiological consequence of the minimum levels of the previous two-year period. However, it does underscore a general reprise in demand for textile machinery across many geographical areas, materializing during the first part of 2010. The demand for Italian machinery was mostly driven by the world’s major markets, with sales showing double digit growth percentages in China, India and Turkey. Overall, Italian exports obtained positive performances on all primary textile manufacturing markets; Asia and South America representing the driving forces for global demand.

The domestic market also recorded a more dynamic trend compared to the 2008-2009 period. Domestic demand jumped by 27% on previous year, for a turnover of close to one billion Euros. “These preliminary closing data are no doubt encouraging - commented ACIMIT’s President Sandro Salmoiraghi - but a deep sense of uncertainty remains regarding the global scenario.”

Effectively, a study conducted by ACIMIT over the first quarter of 2011 shows that forcasts for orders remain Cautions, drawing a picture that is rather stationary with the respect to the last quarter of 2010, both for the foreign and domestic markets.

Exempt MMF from import duties – CITI

The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has placed its Pre-Budget Memorandum for 2011-2012 for the perusal of the Finance Minister of India, Mr Pranab Mukerjee.

CITI has recommended that it is important to exempt duties imposed on imports of man-made fibres (MMF) to help the textile sector source the raw material in large volumes at affordable prices.

CITI has pointed out that, globally MMF is the most dominantly consumed textile fibre and the ratio between man-made fibres and cotton fibre consumption is 60:40 globally while in India it is 41:59 (2009-10).

The recommendation adds that the share of man-made fibre based textile products in India’s export basket from the textile and clothing sector is even lower.

CITI has suggested that, optional excise duty for textile products may be continued at a uniform rate of four percent for all products, irrespective of the fibre content, along with which, excise duty on MMF should also be reduced to four percent.

It has further recommended withdrawal of all anti-dumping duties on MMF and not consider levying fresh anti-dumping duties to remove the anomalies in consumption pattern as well as help increase exports of MMF products from India.

New wool press comes up with higher efficiency

A wool press designed as well as built in Mosgiel has been launched in the market. It is the first no-tramp wool press that has come up in New Zealand after several years. Shearing Services will be selling the machines and P&W Engineering will be manufacturing them.

The 60 percent hike in wool prices in the current season has once again diverted the focus on wool and wool growers as well as wool contractors are replacing their shearing machines. There has been a shortage of a wide variety of machines in New Zealand particularly after the receivership of a wool press producer from Australia around three years ago.

One of the most powerful men in Chinese textiles, Du Yuzhou, President of China National Textile & Apparel Council (CNTAC), is to address international industry leaders at the ITMA-ITMF World Textile Summit later this year.

Almost three-fold increase in Rieter Textile Systems orders

The recovery in the textile machinery and automotive markets that had started in the second half of 2009 continued in 2010. Despite the usual seasonal effects at Automotive Systems in the second six months, demand over the course of the year as a whole was at a considerably higher level than in the previous year.

Orders received by the Rieter Group in the 2010 financial year totaled 3’170.0 million CHF. Compared to the previous year’s figure, this corresponded to an increase of 64% (1’935.1 million CHFin 2009). The trend in order intake was dynamic throughout the year. The steep rise compared with the previous year was due primarily to very strong demand at Textile Systems.The 32% increase in sales by the Rieter Group was less than the growth in orders received due to the low order volume in the previous year. Sales were slightly higher in the second half of the year than in the first six months and totaled 2’585.8 million CHF (1’956.3 million CHF in 2009). Exchange rate trends adversely affected both key figures, especially in the second half. In local currency terms, orders received and sales increased by 68% and 36%, respectively, in the year under review. Based on exchange rates prevailing in 2007, consolidated sales would currently already be 2.9 billion CHF again.

The world market for spinning machinery and components recorded a strong recovery with a broad regional base in the year under review, following two years of conspicuously weak demand. The main markets for Rieter were China, India and Turkey. There was also a large volume of demand from Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Korea, and also the USA. The upswing was driven by investment demand for replacements and expansion as well as strong growth in textile consumption in the major Asian markets. Rieter Textile Systems successfully exploited the positive trend due to its strong market position, increasingly also in machinery and technology components which are adapted to local needs in emerging markets.

Wanjie Group places order for PSF spinning plant

Wanjie Group Co. Ltd. based in China has ordered for a complete polyester staple fibre (PSF) spinning plant from Oerlikon Neumag based in Germany. The Germany-based company will extend engineering services apart from the machinery.

The plant is likely to be installed in the Shandong Province towards the end of this year and the manufacturing is likely to start by the middle of 2012. As per Oerlikon Neumag, Wanjie Group has the highest market share of staple fibre production that is meant for textile usage in the Shandong Province. The Chinese market is extremely competitive for the plant manufacturers.

China is one of the most rapidly growing economies of the world and through this order, the Germany-based company is likely to strengthen its hold in the Chinese market. Gujarat the Investment Hub for Technical Textiles

The Gujarat textile sector attracted investments amounting to around Rs 252 billion at the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit - 2011. In all 139 MoUs were inked at the 2011 summit out of which 34 MOU's are from the emerging Technical Textiles sector. The total investment in Textiles sector is expected to create employment opportunities for around 140,448 people.

The major portions of the investments were made in the Spinning sector, followed by Technical Textiles and rest was accounted for by textile parks, fabric processing and apparel sector. The total investment in technical textiles sector totaling to Rs 45.50 billion (USD 1 billion), which in turn will generate employment for around 12,340 people.

Among the major overseas investors is Finland-based Ahlstrom Fiber composites, a leader in medical textiles and which already has an operational Nonwovens plant in Mundra and is now planning to invest another Rs 400 million. Another Austrian investor is TenCate Geosynthetics Austria Gmbh, which is investing Rs 1 billion and will generate employment for around 100 people.

From amongst the domestic textile investors are Welspun India which is investing Rs 7 billion, Chiripal Poly Films Ltd is investing Rs 10 billion to produce BOPP and BOPET and similar expansion in both (film/yarn for application in technical textile) and Alok Industries is investing Rs 6 billion in expansion of existing capacities and processing for technical textiles.

Others include Narmada Thermal Power Ltd in a Polyester Film (BOPET) plant at a cost of Rs 4 billion; Sumilon Polyester Ltd is investing Rs 2.5 billion in a Pet Film and Metalised Polyester Film unit and GIT Textiles Manufacturing Limited is setting up a technical textiles weaving unit by investing Rs 1 billion.

Shubh Polyfilms Pvt Ltd is investing Rs 2.09 billion to produce BOPET Films, Modern Denim Ltd is investing Rs 1.98 billion to produce protective and sportswear fabrics and a technical textiles park is being setup by Hi Tech Technical Textile Park India at a cost of Rs 1 billion.

M&R introduces Diamondback XL Automatic Textile Press

M&R is pleased to announce the addition of the new Diamondback XL to M&R’s extensive line of automatic textile presses.

M&R’s new Diamondback XL just set a new standard in affordable larger-format entry-level automatic textile printing. With its huge 51 x 53 cm (20” x 21”) print area and the ability to print up to 9 colors, Diamondback XL offers more versatility for the price than any other automatic press on the market. Its servo-driven indexing system provides outstanding performance, while its pneumatic print heads can accept screens up to 66 x 91 cm (26” x 36”). Also included is M&R’s patented Revolver Print Program, which automatically operates individual printheads in programmed sequence and allows multiple flashing without losing a printing position.

Diamondback XL is available in either base or enhanced configuration. Both models feature a touch-screen control panel, side screen holders with micro-registration, calibrated squeegee and floodbar pressure adjustment, M&R’s three-point pallet leveling bracket with quick release, calibrated rear stroke length adjustment, and 41 x 56 cm (16” x 22”) pallets. Enhanced Diamondback XL models add pneumatic screen frame locks, pneumatic squeegee/floodbar locks with no-tools angle adjustment, and pneumatic squeegee pressure regulators.

Investments in Gujarat textile sector set to treble

Investments in the high employment generator; textile sector is expected to receive a boost from the Vibrant Gujarat Summit beginning tomorrow. Investment proposals already received and for the which Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) have crossed the Rs 200 billion mark, up from Rs 84 billion in the previous summit in 2009.

The Gujarat government is mainly trying to attract investments in the technical textiles sector, which is still in its nascent stage in India. Two major multinational technical textile companies seem to have shown keen interest in setting up manufacturing operations in the state.

The other sector which is evincing interest is the spinning sector, in which the government has received around 40 proposals of the 125 odd investment proposals received. The technical textiles sector has attracted around 15 investors, with the rest accounted for by those in weaving, fabric processing and apparel manufacturing.

Amongst the major investors are big textile houses like, Alok Tex¬tiles, Welspun Group, S Kumar's Nationwide, SEL India, Chiripal group, Bhilwa¬ra Group, Jaydeep textiles, Nagarika Group, Mangal Textiles, Lux Hosiery, Filatex Group and many others. Amongst the global companies who are investing in the vertical of technical textiles are TenCate Geosynthetics and American Hygienics Corporation.

CIRCOT showcases cotton technologies at fibre2fashion co-hosted meet

When a Government research institution, joins hand with the private sector to start playing the role of incubator of entrepreneurial projects, then businesses are definitely bound to go places and in the process benefiting all. Zonal Technology Management and Business Planning & Development unit at Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Mumbai in association with fiber2fashion organised a Business Development Programme for “Cotton Technologies” on January 7 at Ahmedabad.

The august gathering was made up from those from the cotton value chain as well as the packaging and particle board manufacturing sector and eminent speakers included experts and scientists from CIRCOT, CICR – Nagpur and CIAE – Bhopal.

In welcoming the delegates, Dr P R Roy, Director, fibre2fashion.com said, “In India, CIRCOT is a premier cotton research organization. Their pioneering research is indeed commendable and needs to be taken to the market place. During my visit to CIRCOT a few months ago, we discussed about the areas of research in cotton technology and products developed by the organisation and the ways and means to commercialize the same.

“Since Gujarat is perhaps one of the leading cotton producers in the country, the entrepreneurs in Gujarat could be interested in testing, incubating and commercializing the various cotton technologies developed by CIRCOT. Normally there is very little interest by the people in the R&D activities undertaken by premier institutes. However, that is now changing and now even the Gujarat government is taking interest in the Ahmedabad Textile Research Association (ATIRA), to ensure that there is an improvement in its functioning.
