Wipe to clean both water and oil-based grime

KB Seiren Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan textile producer Seiren Co., has launched a wipe, which has dual applications. It can eliminate both water and oil-based grime.

The new wipe has been produced from industrial-grade Belima yarn with fibers just one-five microns in diameter and the yarn has 12 times the surface area of typical industrial yarns.

The filament produced from these fibers is just 0.1 decitex in diameter and is so fine that just, 453 grams or just one pound is enough to encircle the globe.

This enables it to wipe away even the finest dust without using any detergent. A blend of hydrophilic nylon and polyester, which has a high affinity for oil, it can remove water and oil based dirt.

‘Subtle signs of recovery’ – German Garment and Leather Technology

The German Garment and Leather Technology has felt subtle signs of recovery over the last few weeks. Between January and August 2009, the real drop in incoming orders was -26 %. "This places our sector slightly above the VDMA average and most other mechanical engineering sectors", says Tilo Ullmer, the association's chairman on this year's member meeting of the VDMA German Garment and Leather Technology Association, held in Baden-Baden.

The VDMA brings together the following sectors of garment and leather technology: sewing and garment machinery, machines for shoe and leather production, laundry and textile cleaning equipment and machines for the processing and finishing of technical textiles. The production volume in year 2008 was 1.005 Million Euro.

China and Turkey as leading markets drop significantly
The German garment and leather technology was affected in 2008 by a global crisis amongst its customers. "For almost two years, the leading markets for the garment and footwear industry, such as China and Turkey, have seen their income drop by 30% or more. Structural problems in the key markets of our customers were then compounded by the global financial crisis", added Ullmer. The managing director of the association, Elgar Straub, added, "All our competitors face the same problems, but we believe that German suppliers will come out of the crisis stronger." He isn't just pinning his faith on Germany's good access to advanced technology but also its market leadership in the area of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient products, for which there is increasing demand. But German manufacturers are also benefiting from increasingly stringent environmental legislation, in China for example, which has impacted positively on German manufacturers of laundry and cleaning machines over the last few years.

Germany as the fourth world exporter
Germany defended fourth place in the rankings of the most important supplier countries for garment and leather technology in 2008, with an export volume of Euro 773 million. The industry recorded a drop compared to 2007 of 13.2 per cent (Euro 891 million). The largest export volume in 2008 was achieved with sewing and garment technology (Euro 394 million).

Foremost inorganic nanofiber production line launches

ELMARCO s.r.o., a world player in the production of machines for the industrial scale production of nanofibers has successfully launched a new type of production line for the production of nanofibres. This so-called inorganic line is the first of its type in the world. The material which the line will manufacture had its world premiere in March 2009, when it was introduced by ELMARCO at it’s “Nano for the 3rd Millennium” conference.

The first contract, enabling the implementation in practice of this entirely new technology, has just been signed with the Czech company Kertak Nanotechnology, based in Prague. „This unique equipment will now be used in the Czech Republic, thus confirming its position as leader in the field of the production and use of nanofiber materials” stated Mr. Ladislav Mareš, ELMARCO executive.

The NS 18S1000i inorganic line, manufactured by ELMARCO, produces a variety of inorganic nanofiber materials. Inorganic nanofibers most often find applications in cosmetics, solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, catalytic converters as well as a range of other applications. Ladislav Mareš added that this new type of NanospiderTM line enables the production and utilization of new materials for the production of, for instance, photovoltaic cells, an alternative source of energy, and the enhanced quality of products for the cosmetic industry, for example skin protection creams.

Ladislav Jandácek, Kertak Nanotechnology executive, said „Our company is the first in the world to commence industrial production of inorganic nanofibers such as TiO2 – titanic dioxide or Li4Ti5O2 – lithium titanate. These fibres are used both in the cosmetic industry and in the transformation of solar heat into electrical energy in photovoltaic panels. Other areas in which they are used include the storage of electrical energy, the improvement of catalytic converters, chemical equipment, power solutions in hybrid vehicles and energy sources for state of the art electronic equipment.

“Inorganic nanofibers and their application in end products is a pre-requisite for so called ‘green products’ – products which are sparing on the environment and which use alternative energy sources. The acquisition of this new line strengthens our company on the market, and allows it to develop its own applications for nanofiber materials. We believe that in cooperation with scientific institutions and with ELMARCO we will continue to be a supplier of leading products in the field of nanofibers on an international scale” noted Ladislav Jandácek.

EFI declares victory over L&P in important patent litigation

Electronics For Imaging, Inc., a world leader in customer-focused digital printing innovation, and its superwide format printer unit VUTEk announced total victory in patent litigation with Leggett & Platt involving EFI’s ultra-violet ink curing technology.

After a string of successful summary judgment motions, one of which was affirmed by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, EFI has reached a non-confidential settlement with L&P that does not require any payment from EFI to L&P. L&P dismissed all of its claims against EFI and promised not to sue EFI or any of its customers based on a claim that EFI products infringe any of the patents-in-suit or any related patent.

L&P first filed the lawsuit in May 2005 against VUTEk during EFI’s acquisition of the innovative superwide format printer business. L&P claimed that its patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,755,518) covered VUTEk’s technology. From the outset EFI maintained that VUTEk invented and patented the technologies first (U.S. Patent Nos. 6,457,823 and 6,616,355). The US District Court in St. Louis agreed with EFI, invalidating all of L&P’s asserted patent claims and ordering L&P to pay EFI’s costs to defend the lawsuit. The US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that conclusion in its entirety. In July 2009, the US District Court held that a second L&P patent (U.S. Patent No. 7,290,874) is also invalid in light of EFI’s patents and printer design technology.

On April 21, 2009, L&P sued EFI again, alleging infringement of a third L&P patent (U.S. Patent No. 7,520,602). As with the two other patents, EFI moved for summary judgment to invalidate this third patent using the same prior art previously relied upon by the court. Faced with the very real possibility of losing a third patent, L&P approached EFI to settle the dispute. Under the settlement, EFI will pay nothing, agreeing to dismiss its claims that the ‘602 patent is invalid and to not oppose L&P’s motion to vacate the July 2009 decision invalidating the ‘874 patent. L&P dismissed all claims against EFI and promised not to sue EFI or its customers under these patents or any related patent.

India less affected by downturn – VP, Dornier Machinery

2008-09 turned out as a tough year for Indian textile industry. Textile machinery companies faced either slowdown in demand or negative demand scenario due to the adversely affected global economy, which trapped the textile industry too. Sales of almost all companies registered slump and some experienced almost 40-50 percent reduction in demand which led to a 30 percent drop in machinery production in India.

Fibre2fashion took the opportunity to speak to Mr. Nitin Bavkar, Vice-President, Dornier Machinery India Pvt. Ltd. In turn he shared his views on recessionary scenario in Indian textile industry and possible recovery from this downturn. Dornier Machinery is a manufacturer of different types of textile machines like weaving machine, rapier weaving machine, air-jet weaving machine, film stretching machines, dryers and textile finishing machines.

According to Mr. Bavkar, India was comparatively less affected by downturn in demand than its counterparts in other countries and due to that Dornier India branch was comparatively less affected by recession, since they are not so much dependant on exports, although, during the tough period, exports from the Indian branch were a bit low, but domestic demand was not affected much.

Mr. Bavkar is quite optimistic about recovery in Indian market and said, “Things are certainly improving in domestic market and especially in weaving segment as the industry has started showing positive signs in investment from terry towel and denim manufactures and this may in turn bring encouraging scenario for weaving sector and weaving machinery manufacturers”.

While trying to elucidate his views on competitiveness of Indian made weaving machinery to its foreign equivalent and willingness of Indian market to invest in comparatively high priced machines Mr. Bavkar said, “Undoubtedly foreign weaving machine manufactures are better placed technologically.

Speed provided by foreign machines is still not offered by our manufacturers as the foreign companies invest a good amount in R&D, which is still not a trend in Indian manufacturing firms. Secondly Indian manufactures have limited manufacturing capacities and they don't manufacture in bulk”, he said.

German Soft Coating provides differences for Berto SPA

Italian flair and German innovation make a happy marriage as integrated designer-denim producer Berto SpA installs the country’s first Monforts stenter line with integrated Soft Coating technology.

Variety is considered the ‘spice of life’, but it is also something of a survival strategy for Berto Industria Tessile SpA, - shortly to celebrate its 120th anniversary and headquartered in the beautiful village of Bovolenta, in Padua, Italy.

Established in 1889 and originally producing sail cloth for Venetian sailing ships, it expanded its range to include woven fabrics for work garments, table linen, shirtings and, in the 1980’s, denim.

A strategy of continuous investment has been a key to the company’s continued success – for example in the early 1960’s it began spinning its own open end yarns and adding ring spinning in 2004.

As denim output intensified the company installed an indigo dyeing plant. Today, as part of a major modernisation and expansion programme, Berto has just taken delivery of a new Monforts eight-chamber Montex stenter – the country’s first to feature the latest Soft Coating technology installed in-line. This, explains Berto’s Finishing Division Manager Sebastiano Antico, will enable the company to increase even further the wide range of differentiated fabrics – primarily denims – it is manufacturing each season. The sensor-controlled Soft Coating unit is a very efficient new method for applying dyes and coatings via a sophisticated roller system.

“It allows very precise applications of moistures (proofing, hydrophobic, functionality) on just one side of the material, or on both, or even to have separate treatments on each side, as required,” explained Monforts Area Sales Manager Henning Frank. “The sensors automatically adjust the moisture application rollers to the speed of the fabric and can move with or against the line, depending on the desired objective.”

“Not only does this open up the potential for a wide range of new treatments and effects to be achieved,” adds Ariodante Corna, of Monforts Italian representative Sacconaghi Monaco, “It can also lead to big savings as a result of the amount of reduced drying energy for the fabric being used.

As a supplier of denim to the leading European designer brands – including Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino in Italy alone – Berto has been quick to see the potential of this new technology.

Obvious initial results have centred on the ability to instantly produce denims that are tough and resilient on the outside, with a softer and more comfortable inner, or in colours that are applied to certain areas of the fabric, but the company has many other new ideas in the pipeline, which it believes are giving it a vital innovation edge over the competition.
